I knew what to expect when I pick out the form of address and offset deuce paragraphs of O City of Broken Dreams. Its a nicely constructed allegory but I feel the like Ive read it before, though I havent. I wasnt expecting Mama Finelli to show up at the end, but she seemed almost superfluous, as Evarts story is bound(p) to be at least somewhat tragic from the title onward. mayhap its just Cheevers tone, but it seems like he doesnt need the re considerer to sympathize fully with gullible ol Evarts plight--he seems more like a sketch than a fully realized character. I destine the story might have worked better were it told from Alices evidence of view: she has as much potential for change, and is just as abnormal by the outcome of their precarious situation, as her husband. in all the characters but Alice and Mildred-Rose argon like variations on a bantering theme.
From Bitseys somehow threatening-yet-harmless chatter, Madge Beattys occult debt, Leavitts wormy office, Farleys butlers bitching, Hewitts lying about the script, Evarts cause realization of hit the hay for Susan Hewitt, to Mama Finellis dollar-sign eyes crusade her to sue Evarts; there is a deliberate playing up of the disingenuous nature of everyone complicated in show business. I think Evarts change is his realization of issues not being as they seem, including his own relationship with Alice. I overly think he ends the story a wiser character because of this realization, which I guess qualifies it as a good piece of fiction, which follows the check-mark conflict thing perfectly.
